Carbon Intensity – Grams of carbon dioxide-equivalents emitted per kilowatt-hour of electricity generated by a specific power source.

CO2e – Carbon dioxide equivalent.

CPU – Central Processing Unit.

CUR – Cost and Usage Report.

CloudWatch – AWS monitoring platform that measures CPU utilization.

External Networking – data transfer between the data center and customers or other cloud service providers (and vice versa), via the internet.

GWP – Global Warming Potential.

HDD – Hard Disk Drive.

Inter-region Networking – data transfer between two regions of a cloud service provider.

Intra-region Networking – data transfer within the same region of a cloud service provider.

Instance – a virtual machine in a cloud computing platform.

Networking – the transfer of data between instances, data centers, the internet, and users.

Non-instance Networking – data transfers that do not interact with a customer’s instance.

PUE – Power Usage Effectiveness.

RAM – Random-access Memory.

Reserved – a component that is allocated to your account. For example, reserving 24 GB of Elastic Block Storage means that you are responsible for the emissions associated with 24 GB of storage, even if you are not using all of it.

SSD – Solid State Drive.

vCPU – Virtual Central Processing Unit.

Virtual Machine – A software emulation of a physical computer system, used in the cloud to divide computing resources between customers.
